Meta-omics and microbial ecosystems

The metaprogramme MEM - Meta-omics and microbial ecosystems, launched in 2010, is a cross-disciplinary research programme which involves teams of microbiologists associated with bioinformaticians concerned by global approaches to different microbial ecosystems.

The prefix Meta- means "what is beyond, what encompasses and goes further than". the suffix -omic corresponds to technologies which make it possible to study a large number of data concerning a set of biological objects, such as a set of genes (genomics), RNA (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), metabolites (metabolomics), etc.

Meta-omic approaches are used to understand complex microbial ecosystems as a whole, such as all the microorganisms of soil, the human intestine or fermented foodstuffs.
